The history of Australia is characterised by a rich tapestry of indigenous cultures that stretches back over 65,000 years. Various Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander groups with distinct languages, cultures, and traditions initially inhabited the continent. European exploration and colonisation began in the 17th century when Dutch and later British navigators arrived on the Australian shores. Captain James Cook’s 1770 voyage marked the British’s formal claim of the eastern coast.

In 1788, the First Fleet, led by Captain Arthur Phillip, established the first European settlement at Sydney Cove, initiating the colonisation of Australia.
